As severe weather approaches Georgia I have compiled a list of things our family has been preparing to keep our home and loved ones safe. This list is a work in progress as I marinate over the next few hours and days. I will be sure that my efforts suit us as best as they can. Check back often if you do not feel confident in your skills to prepare for this storm.
Note that this list is not meant to be alarmist, it is also very Brinson centric, make changes so it works for you and yours. Let's be smart and safe, the best that we can, for our children and loved ones. The latest models show that Athens could fare better than earlier maps have shown, but the threat of tornadoes should still be concerning.
Sending our love to Florida, South Georgia, Alabama and the entire Southeast.
What we are doing to prepare :
- Turn fridge and freezer to coldest temp in case power goes out, do not open often
- Fill containers with water
- Fill bathtub with water (flushing toilets, be sure to secure door if you have small children)
- Fill half of sink with soapy water to wash dishes.
- Fill freezer bags with water and freeze on cookie sheet for later use
- Dump ice from ice maker in container and continue to make more ice standard container
- Take photos of home inventory and upload online
- Make sure all dishes and clothes are washed, sheets are clean in case you lose power/water
- Fill vehicles with gas, as well as canisters
- Check propane for camping stove or grill
- Clean gutters and make sure water drainage is sufficient
- Secure outdoor furniture and play things (trampolines, etc)
- Check storm drains for debris

During Severe Weather:
- If you have severe flooding and have to go into your attic bring an ax with you
- Close all interior doors to contain pressure and potentially save your roof
- Unplug electronics
- Set up interior room with helmets, shoes in case you have to evacuate or there is debris in your home, water and snacks if needed, flashlights, baby mattress and bring essentials like NOAA radio with you when you take cover. I keep those things by my side when there is eminent threat.
